Car of the Month: Mercedes C-Class

The Mercedes C-Class is a modern classic, having gained a worthy reputation as one of the top executive cars on the market, against rivals such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. The latest generation arrived in 2014, with various models available including a coupe, saloon and convertible, as well as the performance orientated AMG line.

Key Features of the Mercedes Benz C-Class

Space

One of the key differentiators with the Mercedes C-Class over models such as the A-Class is the added space. The cabin is very spacious, giving passengers plenty of space to get comfortable on longer journeys.

The boot space is also of very similar size to the BMW 3 Series, giving you plenty of space for a weekly shop, the family, or for business trips.

Interior

As you’d expect with all Mercedes, the quality is as you’d expect. You get a gloss black trim throughout, combined with chrome accents while higher trim levels in the range come with extras such as heated leather seats, ambient lighting and wood panelling, to enhance the luxurious driving experience.

Range of engines

With the Mercedes C-Class you get a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powered engines. The diesel in particular is very economical and low on CO2 emissions if you’re looking to use the car for longer motorway journeys. While the AMG series models provide the ultimate in driving performance and power.

The best models to opt for are the C 300e or the C 300de which are the most efficient, and fitted with plug in hybrid technology.

Reliability

Mercedes is known for producing vehicles that are well-engineered and dependable. They come standard with seven airbags, traction control, driver drowsiness detection, as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Some Sport and AMG line models may additionally include The Driver Assistance Pack, which can be requested during the buying process. It includes Distronic Plus (which can automatically apply the brakes or accelerator to keep you a safe distance from the car in front), lane-keeping assistance (which warns you if you're drifting out of your lane), Pre-Safe (which prepares the car to deal with an accident if it detects an impending collision), and blind-spot assistance (which warns you if there's a vehicle in your blind spot).

Lots of tech

C-Class vehicles from 2014 onwards come standard with a 7 inch touchscreen, bluetooth and are AppleCarplay and AndroidAuto compatible. You also get a 5 speaker surround system.

More premium models may come with an integrated satellite navigation, and a larger 10.3 inch touchscreen console.
