Diesel versus Petrol
When looking for your next used car, fuel type will no doubt be a factor in the buying process, but how do petrol and diesel hold up against each other? Let’s find out…
There are plenty of used petrol and diesel cars on the market and some of us won’t even consider the fuel when we come to buy, but here are the pros and cons of each so you can make your decision.
Petrol cars
We will start with the pros first, and the main one is that petrol cars are usually a little cheaper and petrol is cheaper to buy too. They are quieter to run and typically less expensive to repair if something does go wrong.
That being said, they do depreciate faster and petrol engines do not last as long. They produce more C02 emissions by around 20% versus Diesel cars and they aren’t as fuel efficient either and tend to use more fuel that a Diesel counterpart.

Diesel cars
Now, onto Diesel. So they are more efficient to drive and to run, as well as having lower C02 emissions. A diesel engine is often more powerful too, so if you plan on towing a caravan or similar, you might need that extra bit of power in the tank. Another pro is that
They have a longer lifespan than petrol, and they do tend to depreciate at a lower and slower rate.
The cons are that they are often more expensive and that the fuel does cost more to buy. The insurance tends to be a little more expensive too, by around 10% and if you suffer with asthma, the particles in Diesel can cause a flare up for you.
