How To Entertain Children on Long Journeys
The summer holidays are approaching, which means you'll probably be taking a lot of family trips and possibly even going on holiday with your children. We understand how frustrating and distracting it can be sometimes to have young children in the car with you, and when they get bored, they actively bother and distract you. However, we have some suggestions for keeping your youngsters amused while driving for a pleasant car journey.
1) Try some road games
Eye spy is a popular game, but you can also play car spotting games like spot the red car or the animal game. This is when one of you choose an animal, and the next person has to select an animal that starts with the same letter as the preceding animal's last letter. For example the first person would say Tiger then the next may say Raven, and so on.
2) Put a film on
Watching a film can be a great distraction for your children. If you have a tablet or laptop, download a few of their favourite films, and pack some snacks for them to enjoy while they’re watching it. You can’t go wrong with popcorn, crisps, snack bars or some chopped up pieces of fruit.
3) Drawing & Colouring
You could give your kids an etch a sketch - this drawing board from Amazon is similar, give them a travel doodle or mess free colouring book to work on, or use an all in one snack and travel tray.
4) Play an Audiobook
Because reading may cause car sickness in some children, you might want to try an audiobook instead. Audible offers a free 30-day free trial with access to thousands of different audiobook titles. You can listen to the audiobooks without having to be connected to the internet if you download the app and the audiobooks.
5) Use the iPad for some online games
Roblox is a famous game that offers a wide range of games to choose from. Your children can also chat with friends while using the app, which is a big draw for kids. You can also try other popular games such as Crossy Road or Minecraft.
6) Snacks!
A long car journey isn’t the same without snacks. If you’re travelling in the morning and haven’t had time to give the kids breakfast, you can try the little instant oat pots,or granola bars and fruit to keep them fuller for longer.
You can also bring yoghurt pouches, chewy sweets such as starburst or even some sour patch kids. Separate them equally into sandwich bags to make sure they’re getting an even amount.
7) Try mystery grab bags
Fill several bags with 3-4 various items, such as a snack, toy, games like playing cards, etc., to keep your children engaged and entertained and make the time pass even faster during the car drive.
Distribute them on a regular basis to keep the kids' spirits up and their excitement high.
