UK insurance groups
If you are looking for your next used car, something you may not have considered is the cost of the insurance that will go along with it. Different cars belong to different insurance groups, which is what calculates the cost of your insurance, here is a guide to navigating them for when you come to buy your next car.
When categorising cars into insurance groups, there are a few things which are taken into consideration. Number one is the cost of repairs, so if the vehicle does get into an accident, how much is it going to cost to get the car back on the road again? The next thing considered is the vehicles performance. Faster cars end up higher insurance groups as they have more speed and power behind them. Another factor is security, as if a vehicle is easy to break into, it is more likely that you will end up claiming on the insurance, in theory. Lastly, safety features like automatic braking are considered too and factored in.
There are 50 insurance groups in the UK, with 0 being the cheapest to insure and 50 the most expensive.
While there are certain cars that generally fall into a category, it will all depend on the age, model trim and spec, so it is worth looking at individual cars instead of guessing or using a guide without incorporating the specifics of the car.
For example, there is a Fiat Panda and a Citroen C1 that fall into the cheapest insurance group, while things like an Audi Q7 will be in the top end of the insurance groups.
If you are looking at a car in particular, it is always worth running an insurance quote on it to make sure that it isn’t totally out of your price range, as you don’t want car insurance that costs as much per month as the car.
