Volkswagen History: Who Created Volkswagen?

Here at Car Synergy, we know that a car's story is just as important as its performance. The history of Volkswagen is fascinating, and it's a favourite brand among our customers. Volkswagen, which means "the people's car," has grown from its humble beginnings to become a global giant.

In this blog, we'll delve into the remarkable Volkswagen history, answering key questions like ‘who created Volkswagen?’ and ‘when was Volkswagen founded?’ We'll also take you on a journey through the brand's evolution and highlight why a used VW remains a fantastic choice for any driver today.

Who Created Volkswagen?

The story of the VW’s history is intertwined with the vision of creating an affordable and accessible car. In 1934, the German government commissioned the development of this "People's Car." The task of designing the vehicle was given to the talented automotive engineer, Ferdinand Porsche, who would go on to create the iconic and much-loved design.

His goal was to create a durable, economical, and reliable car that could be afforded by the average family. This vision laid the foundation for a brand that would become a household name around the world.

When Was Volkswagen Founded?

The brand was officially founded on the 28th of May 1937, with its main factory located in the town of Wolfsburg, marking the beginning of Volkswagen history. Prior to its founding, in 1935, the first Series 3 prototype was presented, featuring a wooden and steel chassis. Test drives in 1936 proved the concept to be a success.

However, the outbreak of World War II dramatically altered the brand's early course. The factory was converted to produce military vehicles, and it wasn't until after the war, with the help of a British Army officer, that the factory was rebuilt. By 1946, the company was once again ready to produce cars for the public, restarting production of the legendary Käfer, or Beetle.

Post-War Growth and International Expansion

Following the war, the company was placed under the control of the West German government. By 1949, Volkswagen models accounted for more than half of all passenger cars produced in the country. The brand's rapid growth continued with the introduction of the versatile Transporter in 1950.

International success soon followed, especially in the United States, where the charming and quirky Beetle became the best-selling imported car. The Beetle became a cultural icon, and its reputation for being a reliable and no-frills car cemented the brand's place on the world stage.

The Evolution of the Volkswagen Lineup

As the automotive landscape evolved, so did Volkswagen. The company shifted away from its famous rear-engine designs and embraced a new wave of modern, sporty models. This period of innovation in the history of the Volkswagen brand gave us some of the most popular cars on the road today.

The launch of the Passat, Scirocco, and Polo marked a new era for the company, but it was the introduction of the Golf in 1974 that truly changed the game. The Golf was an instant hit, quickly surpassing the Beetle to become the company’s global best-seller and a benchmark for the hatchback segment.

Today, Volkswagen continues to push boundaries, with a strong focus on electric vehicles, such as the impressive ID range, proving its commitment to a sustainable future and adding a new chapter to Volkswagen history.

Volkswagen Today: A Global Automotive Leader

From its beginnings as a single-vehicle manufacturer, the company is now one of the largest and most successful automotive groups in the world. With over 100 production plants globally, the Volkswagen Group is also the parent company of a prestigious portfolio of brands, including Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche.

This immense growth and influence is a testament to the brand's enduring appeal and its ability to consistently produce quality vehicles that meet the needs of drivers everywhere.
